DIABLO (werktitel)

By Anthony van Gog

After The quiet, a performance in which the stillness of the body took centre stage; in the solo piece DIABLO, Anthony van Gog turns his attention to what breaks free from that stillness. To the voice that emerges from the body. To breath, vibration, sound and the forces that shape, distort and set a voice in motion.

At DIABLO From a growing archive of human and non-human sounds, a voice emerges that is constantly changing form. It breathes, breaks, whispers, screams. It seems human, until it is no longer so. Different voices, bodies and sounds merge into a single living composition. A voice that constantly reshapes itself, falls apart and comes together again.

At DIABLO Dance, performance and live sound merge into a sensory choreography in which the voice breaks free from its origins. What remains when a voice no longer belongs to a single body or identity? Underlying these physical transformations lies a political question: what does freedom mean when different worlds all lay claim to it, yet understand it to mean something entirely different?

DIABLO shows how beliefs and identities can crack, shift and clash – and what remains when nothing can be taken for granted.

Anthony van Gog graduated from the Performance programme at the Maastricht Theatre Academy. His work lies at the intersection of theatre and performance art. He continually creates a dialogue between body, sound and space. Alongside his artistic practice, Anthony is studying for a Master’s degree in Philosophy at the University of Antwerp.

Press coverage of *The Quiet*:
The quiet is a spectacle on a microscopic scale; even the slightest tremor in a finger puts you on edge. Confronting – that’s how it feels, too. The bodies that jolt, tremble and scrape across the hard surface of the platform. We often think we are significant beings, but we are nothing more than a sack of soft tissue.
